Mental Health And Crochet, My Journey.

“Mental health…is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going.” – Noam Shpancer, PhD

During a difficult time of my life, I found something that helped to make a difference: crochet. I was looking to feel a part of something and to learn something new, so I began to search the internet and came across videos of people making their own creations. When my family started to welcome newborns, I learned how to make new and unique gifts by hand.

The confidence from crochet made me feel like I could do or make anything and helped me to redirect my focus into something exciting and beautiful – made from my own hands. Being able to showcase my work has helped me feel connected to my soul.

Mental Health comes in many forms and the need is enormous.I first found Random Acts of Crochet Kindness and loved making small items with notes to put a smile on someone that may be having a hard time or a bad day. Believe it or not, it actually helped me to do this for a total stranger.

Random Acts of Crochet Kindness group creator Olivia Dieterich says the group is for “people that are putting kindness into the world and want to share it, or for people who have found an act of kindness and want to give thanks.” The group has over 140,000 members on Facebook.

Later on, I also came across another group called Square the Love on Instagram and the work being done by Abby of Calm Homemade is outstanding in reaching others in need with mental health and providing donations. Abby says the aim of the group is “to take our community’s connection to the next level.” 120 crochet and knitters joined the Square the Love project from over 50 different places across the world last year and this year she is doing it again and I am happy to be a part of it.

Who knows how many other groups are out there making a difference in this way.

In my opinion, there isn’t enough focus or help for mental health in general and in our society. I wish there was a focus on this issue when I was growing up. There is so much happening to each and every one of us and the world, that we need to try and find a way to boost our minds, increase our focus, and work towards feeling better in whichever way works best.

If you aren’t sure how, I wasn’t either, and yet I found a way to be part of things that were bigger than me and with a true purpose towards healing and for me that is crochet.
