NICU Awareness Month: Crochet is a Powerful Tool for Healing

September is NICU Awareness Month. The art of crochet is becoming more and more noticeable and needed. It is being used to help in many different ways that include baby and patient care.

Recently, I contributed crochet octopi and hearts for a local effort at Tampa General Hospital (TGH). I was impressed by how crochet is being looked at as a method of healing, development, and support.

It was found in a hospital in Denmark that when “premature babies cuddled with the octopi they had more regular heartrates and better oxygenation. The tentacles resemble the umbilical cord for the baby.”

Crochet and knitted hearts are being used as well at Tampa General Hospital for babies. According to the March of Dimes, more Florida babies are born premature (10.9 percent) than the national average. This effort goes past NICU Awareness Month and is a great way to give back and help the community.

Crochet is not just a hobby; it’s a powerful tool for healing.
